Round Lake

The best trail head for this hike is at The Big Meadow Camp Ground on highway 89 a few miles south of Lake Tahoe (on Luther Pass). The trail head is on the north side of the parking area, and immediately crosses highway 89. The initial part of the hike climbs to Big Meadow, then is mostly flat or has a gradual uphill slope. Except for the meadow area, the trail is shaded by the surrounding forest. Shortly before arriving at the lake there is a down hill slope. The trail forks at the bottom of the down hill slope (going to the right continues on to Lake Dardnelles).

The trail from Carson Pass is longer, with a greater change in elevations. It is known for it's wild flower displays in late June and early July. The trail head is a few hundred yards west of the ranger station (on the opposite side of highway 88). There is ample parking at the trail head. The hike initially climbs over granite hills, then traverses a large meadow. There is little shade, so bring a hat and sun screen.
